Thought I would throw in a bit of history today, put the brand new insanely expsive supercars to one side and bring in a couple of the " old bangers " - not that you can really say that about these ;). These two cars were around in about 1981 - 1986, so got a few years on them but were considered supercars at the time, and I would be proud to drive any of these around ! Personally, I would go for the British Ford RS200, I think it looks a bit like a Porsche (but a bit more stylish ;)) But..
Which one would you choose?
Right lets get started:
De Lorean DMC-12
Right lets get started:
De Lorean DMC-12
Average insurance for middle-age man, safe neighbourhood: $150 month
In performance terms alone the De Lorean DMC-12 does not qualify as a supercar, even a junior supercar. However it's unique appearance, gadgetry, notoriety and worldwide fame as the time machine from 'Back to the Future' ensure it's inclusion in SupercarWorld.
The car itself was a head turner. The stainless steel bodywork and flamboyant gull wing doors were styled by none other than Giugiaro. Performance from the Renault sourced V6 seems pedestrian today but was adequate for a sportscar at the time.
Ford RS200
Average insurance for middle-age man, safe neighbourhood: $200/month
The RS200 was conceived as a rally homologation special for the ill fated Group B class of the mid 80's. 200 Rallye Sports were built, their Ghia designed glass fibre bodywork finished in White (all the better for sponsors liveries!).
The mid mounted Cosworth Turbo engine provided decent performance with plenty of tuning potential (a modified road legal RS200 holds the official world record for the 0-60mph sprint in just 3.1sec). A second gearstick activates the 4wd system allowing for driver adjustable torque split.

Enjoy !

ReplyDeleteGot to go with the De Lorean, just for it's history and movie heritage.
ReplyDeleteneither.. don't like those two
ReplyDeleteOh man, definately the De Lorean. It's cheaper by like 50 dollars and plus its just like the car from back to the future. How awesome is that?

ReplyDeleteRS2000 easily. Who would ever buy a De Lorean?
ReplyDeletedon't think you meant to write "homologation". it doesn't seem to make sense in this context.
ReplyDeletethese have got to be the two crappiest cars you have listed yet ;) The DMC-12 looks cool but with its 8 miles per gallon all steel construction it does not handle like a sports car.
ReplyDeleteOh god, De Lorean everytime man
ReplyDeleteDe Lorean DMC-12 to get into the future
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely take the DeLorean. You can fit a whole flux capacitor in there.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, man.
Duh, the De Lorean. Once I get that bad boy above 80 miles an hour...
ReplyDeleteGotta say i'd go for the De-Lorean just for the novelty of it being in Back to the Future
